I often get asked about how I went about designing the Folk Art Holy Family Hearts series, so here is some information about that:

When designing the Immaculate Heart I wanted it to be floral and feminine, and centered around the Sunflower which represents Jesus. I included the traditional spear piercing the heart of Mary, and it is interesting to think of the spear being made of flowers, symbolic perhaps of the sweetness we can gain from our own sorrow and suffering. ​

For the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I began with the crown of thorns, and tried to have most of the other elements growing from that. It also includes many downturned flowers, as I was thinking of Jesus's agony in the garden. The fiery leaves, representing His burning love for us and the light He brings to the world, include a cross shaped bloom.

The main elements of the Chaste Heart of Joseph are lilies, representing purity. Joseph and images of his heart are traditionally pictured with lilies, so that was the basis for this design. His heart is also centered around the Sunflower and has several floral groups of three to represent the Trinity. I also included some elements from each of the other designs, because Joseph's heart was surely influenced by his close sharing of life with Mary and Jesus.
